Social Justice Initiatives

This term we focused on raising awareness of how extreme weather events affect vulnerable members of our community.

Following the devastating Victorian bushfires earlier this year, students explored the challenges faced by people experiencing disadvantage, particularly as around 19% of Melbourne residents live below the poverty line and are at greater risk during extreme heat and flooding events.

As winter approached, students participated in a large-scale collection drive, donating toiletries and essential items to Saint Vincent de Paul. They also raised funds to support the work of the Exodus community in Melbourne. As part of this awareness campaign, we hosted the winter experience, an immersive evening that encouraged students to reflect on the hardships faced by many in our community and how they can make a positive difference. The event included presentations from the Exodus community, the creation of care packages for Vinnies, and a reflective prayer around the campfire.

This term, we also highlighted the importance of preventing bullying through the 鈥楧o It for Dolly Day鈥 campaign held in memory of 14-year-old Amy Dolly Everett who tragically died following sustained bullying and cyber bullying. The campaign encourages communities to 鈥榞o blue鈥 to promote kindness, courage, and support. Students marked the occasion by wearing blue ribbons, creating kindness cards, and painting blue hearts on their hands. United the message that bullying has no place in our community.

College Event: Careers Expo

The careers expo held on Friday the 22nd of May was the highly successful event bringing together approximately 1,100 students from 爆走黑料 College secondary college, St. Mary’s College in Seymour, and the Mastery School. The strong turnout also included a significant number of parents and carers along with careers practitioners from other schools creating a vibrant and highly engaged learning environment.

The expo featured a diverse range of exhibitors including leading universities, TAFE providers and local businesses offering students valuable exposure to a wide variety of post-school pathways.

A particularly cool element of the year’s expo was the strong representation of former 爆走黑料 College students returning as exhibitors or representatives of their industries and study pathways. All collegians were present across a range of organisations including Carlton College of Sport, Marcus Oldham College, SEDA Group, Mitchell Shire Leisure Centre and Nestle.

Their involvement provided students with relatable real world insights and demonstrated the diverse and successful pathways 爆走黑料 College graduates pursue beyond school. We thank the pathways team and all the exhibitors who generously gave their time and expertise to support us and provide us with information for our future.

VCE-VM: Live FM Project

On the 25th and 26th of May this year, 12 VCE-VM students conducted our live FM project. Prior to undertaking the recording sessions, we also completed a day of training as well as several weeks of group planning to prepare for our interviews. The purpose of this project was to build communication skills and learn about unique stories of locals and other successful individuals, including many 爆走黑料 alumni.

Throughout this project, we developed skills such as problem solving, teamwork, communication, and networking. We also learned how to conduct effective interviews by using open-ended questions and research. Each group conducted at least two interviews with both external guests and staff from within the college. We were responsible for inviting the guests to attend and then researching their stories and preparing targeted questions for the interviews. This required a lot of planning and communication between the group members and our guests.

From the project come many highlights. A big one was a group of being the first people to interview legend Brent Harvey after his all-time games record was broken. We also got to speak with some alumni such as Simon Costa and Jeremy Burge about their life journeys as well as building a deeper rapport with the staff at the college by learning more about their personal career pathways.

Overall, this was an exciting experience and a good opportunity to build skills in a practical school environment.

Co-Curricular: Rock of Ages Production

Hey everyone, we just wanted to take a moment to look back at this year’s production of Rock of Ages High School edition and celebrate what an incredible experience it’s been for us. Over the past few months, students from years 8 to 12 have worked together to put on three huge performances at the Plenty Rangers Arts and Convention Centre and it was such an amazing experience to be a part of.

One of the most cool parts of the show was definitely getting to perform in a professional theater venue. From the lighting and sound to the backstage and technical areas, it gave us the chance to experience what it’s really like to be in a professional style production. And of course, we can’t forget about the live student band. Having students performing the music for the shows live every night made the whole show, and they absolutely killed it across all three performances.

Getting to play Lonnie Barnett, the dramatic conjurer of the show was such a fun experience. I loved being able to interact with the audience and bringing a lot of energy to such an amazing role.

Playing Dennis Dupree, the owner of Dupree’s Bourbon Room, was definitely a highlight for me, too. And it was such a fun character to bring to life on stage.

What made this production really special though was the sense of community. Students from all different year levels came together in one big production family. Whether people were on stage, backstage or in the band, everyone played such an important role.

The collaboration across all areas of performing arts made the whole thing come together. Everyone supported each other, celebrated each other’s success, and worked together to make the show the best it could possibly be.

We’re incredibly proud of everything that was achieved and so thankful to all the staff, students, families, and community members who supported the production along the way. And after such a successful year, we’re already excited to see what next year’s school production will bring.

Thanks again for supporting this year’s school production.

Co-Curricular: Game Changers

This year in Game Changers, service has grown significantly. Our year 11s and twelves, soon joined by years 10 and 9, have supported the Exodus community with breadruns and community lunches.

In the last week of term, year 11s attended the Exodus Solidarity Camp, assisting with projects in Heidelberg West. All year levels jump into cookups once a term preparing meals for the Romsey and Kilmore community centres. Years 7 to 9 have also helped with community lunches in Romsey and Lancefield.

A major part of our year 12 ministry has been monthly visits to the Vic market providing practical support for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. And students in year 7 to 10 have been serving at the breakfast club at St. Patrick’s Primary School, continuing into next semester.

If you’re ready to lead, grow in faith, serve others, and make a difference, join game changers in semester 2. Complete the form on Simon and we’ll be in touch soon.

Co-Curricular: STEM

In our STEM co-curricular program, we’ve been exploring real world challenges through innovation and hands-on learning. Some students have been bringing their ideas to life through 3D printing, currently developing ideas into digital designs. Others are working on game designs that feature adventure narratives and coding that builds interactive experiences for potential users. Some of us have been engineering and testing the limits of Lego techniques with elastic bands and applying physics and problem solving.

In drone programming, students are learning to code flight paths and explore emerging technologies, troubleshooting in small teams to refine their process. One of the students is currently designing and planning the programming of their own artificially intelligent chat bots. One student has been developing a working model of a Morse code decoder which entered into the year’s science talent search.

Through STEM co-curricular, we鈥檝e already had a range of opportunities to guide our interest to develop innovative products and solve human- centred problems and we will continue to develop and refine these projects next semester.

Co-Curricular: Winter Sport

Hello everyone, it’s your sport captains Bobby and Emerson here with your Term Two Sport Report Recap.

The winter sporting season has begun in an impressive fashion with 爆走黑料 students demonstrating outstanding commitment, teamwork, and resilience across a wide range of sports. Whether it’s on the field, court, track, or the hockey pitch, our students have proudly represented the college and embraced every challenge that has come their way.

There have been some fantastic team performances so far this season. Our Open B girls鈥 soccer team has been one of the standout success stories, winning four of their first five matches and scoring an incredible 29 goals along the way.

The boys鈥 First XVIII football have also made a strong start, winning three of their opening five games against quality opposition and building great momentum as the season progresses.

Cross country has enjoyed one of its strongest seasons in recent years with record participation numbers and some outstanding results. A particular highlight was the girls鈥 team finishing third overall in the PEGS round while Isabelle placed third in the year 7 to 12 girls鈥 division.

Across our other winter sports, there have been plenty of achievements worth celebrating. The girls鈥 basketball and net net teams have continued to develop strongly while our girls hockey team has shown tremendous growth and determination throughout the season.

We’d also like to congratulate Claire on her selection in the Victorian Development hockey team, an outstanding achievement that reflects her hard work and dedication.

Most importantly, every team has represented 爆走黑料 with pride, sportsmanship, and a willingness to support one another regardless of the result. We thank all players, coaches, staff, and supporters for their contribution to another successful term of sport. Good luck to all teams for the remainder of the winter season and go ACK.

Closing Message from the Principal

Greetings to the 爆走黑料 family. This term has been marked by several significant milestones for our college. I begin with the announcement of the next evolution of our learning program designed to drive improvement in student learning outcomes and supported by a refreshed timetable structure featuring five periods each day. This is a really exciting step forward in strengthening the learning experience for all our students.

As part of our commitment to extending and growing our immersion opportunities, our first group of students departed in the last week of term for Same in Timor-Leste. This experience will deepen their understanding of service, culture, and global citizenship, values that reside at the heart of our Marist tradition.

In May, we had the college production Rock of Ages, which is a vibrant and high energy celebration of 1980s rock music and culture, showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of our students. From strong vocal performances to dynamic choreography, the cast brought the story to life with enthusiasm and confidence, capturing both the humor and heart of the musical. The live band added an authentic edge while the colorful costumes and creative staging transported audiences straight to the Sunset Strip. The production was a testament to the teamwork, perseverance and passion of everyone involved both on stage and behind the scenes and it was warmly received by the college community.

In the last week of term, we also gathered for our Term 2 Aspirations Assembly, a wonderful opportunity to showcase and celebrate the achievements of our students across many areas of college life. We congratulate our award recipients and all involved with the assembly. Your dedication and growth continue to inspire us.

On Tuesday the 9th of June, we celebrated the Feast of St. Marcellin Champagnat, a significant moment in our Marist calendar. This year’s celebration included the introduction of the Champagnat Spirit Awards, recognising students and staff who embody the qualities of humility, simplicity, and presence.

We also launched our generational pins honouring families who across generations have contributed to the 爆走黑料 College story. It’s an enduring testament to the strength of our community.

Our senior students sat the GAT examination in the last week of term, an important milestone in their academic journey. We commend them for their focus and commitment. We hope that this can be the catalyst for greater achievement in the months to come in preparing them for the next steps when they leave the college at the year’s end.

Lastly, we look forward to launching the new college strategic plan at the start of next term, offering an exciting and powerful opportunity to set a clear, energising direction for the entire school community. Framing the launch as a fresh beginning allows staff, students, and families to step into the term with a shared sense of purpose, knowing exactly what the college is striving towards and why it matters. By unveiling the plan early through a combination of staff briefings, student-friendly messaging and community communication, we hope to create both momentum and a signal that this isn’t just another document, but a living road map that will shape decisions, initiatives, and daily practice. We are confident that it will provide clarity and help everyone see their role in bringing the strategy to life, building collective ownership and excitement as the college moves confidently into its next chapter.

As we come to the end of Term 2, I want to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks to every member of our college community. Your support, encouragement, and partnership continue to shape the vibrant learning environment we are so proud of at 爆走黑料 College. I hope all families enjoy a wonderful and well-deserved mid-year break. I wish you all a restful and enjoyable time. I look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the term ahead.

Quae Supra Quaere Always, thank you.

Principal鈥檚 Message

Mr Paul Finneran, Principal

Greetings to the 爆走黑料 family.

Welcome to another edition of Shandon Calls. Since our last newsletter, the term continues to hurdle towards the end of the year, and we have much to celebrate. Our Year 12 students have completed their examinations. While they await their results in the weeks to come, we pray that the next chapter of their lives is one that brings much hope and joy. We thank them for their contribution to the 爆走黑料 story.

Performing Arts Highlights

Over the past few weeks, we’ve enjoyed a number of performances from our VCE VM music and dance students and our co-curricular bands, which serve to highlight the vast array of talent we have here at 爆走黑料 College.

On Thursday t6 November, we held the VCE performing arts evening in which our Unit 1 & 2 music and dance students in Years 10 and 11 presented their works, and what was a wonderful display of their abilities. The students and staff are to be commended for the hard work they have put in to developing their performances.

On Thursday 20 November, we held a co-curricular band evening where the audience were treated to a number of performances covering a broad range of musical genres. These events bode so well for the future of performing arts at the college.

Annual Awards Celebration

On another note, this year we have changed the time of our annual awards celebration from an evening event to during the school day. Tuesday 20 November at 9:30 a.m. we will be holding the awards ceremony, and the parents of all award winners have been invited.

Our objective in changing the time is to celebrate our students in front of the entire community, as we seek to encourage all students to aspire to be their very best. Central to the philosophy of our 爆走黑料 Way, is the notion of aspiration. We want our students to aspire to be the best version of themselves and to strive for excellence in all that they do. It is our hope that holding the annual awards ceremony in front of the entire community will engender a spirit of aspiration within our students and encourage them to reach for the stars.

Parent Association Meeting

Our next parent association meeting will be held next Wednesday 20 November beginning at 6:30 p.m. The focus of the meeting will be the new learning framework which will be presented by a Deputy Principal of Learning and Teaching, Mr Liam McCormack. We look forward to your contribution to learning and teaching at 爆走黑料 College.

Thank You to Our Community

As the year progresses towards its rapid conclusion, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks for your support throughout the year. One of the many gifts of 爆走黑料 College is its palpable sense of community and the 爆走黑料 family spirit is well and truly alive, each and every day. Thank you for all that you do to support your child and I look forward to continuing our vital partnership in 2026.

Quae Supra Quaere, Always.

St. Vincent to Paul's Christmas Appeal

Olivia, Mission Captain

This term, we turned our hearts to raising funds for the St. Vincent to Paul’s Christmas appeal.

This year, hundreds of families across Victoria will face a Christmas without the comfort of a family, gifts under the tree, or a traditional dinner on the table. As a part of the Christmas appeal, each learning mentor group was responsible for assembling a hamper of food and money for a Christmas ham, which will be delivered to a family in need. In addition, our learning mentor groups and staff also purchased Christmas puddings and cakes from local family business, Alpine Valley Fine Foods. Proceeds of the sale will go directly to Vinnie’s.

Through our generous efforts, we hope to make Christmas a little merrier and brighter for families facing difficult times.

Summer Sports

Bobby & Emerson, Sports Captains

Summer Sport is off to a promising and competitive start, with our teams experiencing a mix of wins and losses across various sports.

Basketball, cricket, tennis, volleyball, touch football, and our softball teams have all shown strong effort and improvement with several securing early victories while others continuing to build momentum. Overall, it has been a positive beginning to the season with students demonstrating great teamwork, determination, and school spirit in every match.

The First Boys Cricket team has had a balanced start to the season, recording one win and one loss from their opening two games. Their victories showcase strong teamwork, disciplined bowling, and confident batting, while the loss provided valuable lessons and areas to build on. Overall, the team is tracking well and looking to develop consistency as the season progresses.

The First Girls Cricket had their first win on the Carroll Oval against Wesley College, defeating Wesley by eight wickets. Shout out to Ruby for taking five wickets and Emerson taking two with all the girls bowling extremely well. Fielding was also a highlight with many stopped fours and catches being taken. Emerson and Ava opened the batting with bringing the team to a great start making 51 runs combined, while Bridget and Ruby were able to make the final runs getting the team across the line for a win. Now they look to take on Caulfield next week to hopefully obtain their second win of the season.

The First Boys Basketball team has shown great intensity and demonstration despite a challenging start to the season. With two narrow losses, their effort, energy, and competitiveness has been clear in both games, and the team continues to build confidence as they look to turn their strong play into wins in the coming rounds.

Summer Sports has continued to grow this term with up to 40 teams across all sports competing in the and looking to add another 11 teams in Term 1.

Congratulations to everyone that is competing in a co-curricular summer sport and keep up the amazing effort.

This term we held the Student Vs Staff ultimate frisbee game on 6 November. It was an amazing turnout, and we love seeing all the students that had to come long to support the event. Unfortunately, the teachers came across with the win. We had many great performances during the game from both the student鈥檚 and teacher鈥檚 sides. Now the students look to gain the win at the next Student Vs Staff event.

Congratulations to those who participated on the weekend. There were lots of great performances. Good luck for students playing their last round of Summer Sports before the break.

MyStart Program

Mr Liam McCormack, Deputy Principal of Teaching & Learning

Our MyStart program will start on Monday 24 November.

This program is designed to give students the opportunity to commence their learning ahead of the 2026 academic year. It will allow students the opportunity to meet their teachers, understand the course, and initiate their learning.

For our VCE students in particular, it gives them the chance to make a start on their learning outcomes and complete study over the break. This ultimately helps set our students up for success in VCE.

I’d like to wish all our students a productive MyStart program and a restful break.
